Mediterranean Diet
Q. I just returned from a wonderful trip to Italy and ate and drank like a KING. Amazingly, I lost some weight over there and look and feel great. Did I just experience the so-called “Mediterranean Diet”? Doug McCall Newport Beach, California ANSWER: A. Over the years I have accompanied hundreds of Americans on my group tours to Italy. One of the first things visitors notice is that Italy seems to be a food and wine lover’s paradise – where bold flavors and freshness abound, and where expectations are rarely disappointed. However, it is ironic that given the quality and quantity of incredible food
Buying Gold on the Ponte Vecchio
Buying Gold on the Ponte Vecchio QUESTION: Growing up as an Italian-American in the 50’ & 60’s, it always seemed that everyone of my family and friends had some sort of gold chain with a cross or medal around their neck. Often the gold was given to you by your godparents or sponsor at your confirmation, and you were certainly obliged to wear it forever. I’d like to continue this tradition for the next generation in our family. My wife and I are traveling to Florence this year and I understand that the Ponte Vecchio is the
Spaghetti and Meatballs, an Italian Myth?
Q. Could you please tell me where spaghetti and meatballs came from? As far as I can tell, it doesn't exist anywhere in Italy and none of the Italians I've met have even heard of it -- at least in the north, I've heard Italian-Americans swear that it is a family recipe going back to Italy. Maybe it was a legitimate recipe in the south of Italy in the early 1900's and got phased out of the popular cuisine between now and then in Italy while it continued here? I thought maybe you would have the answer.

The Pigeons and Gondolas of Venice, Italy
Ciao Amici (hello friends), Every major city in the world has its iconic town center, square or plaza (piazza in Italian). New York has its Times Square, London has Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus and Paris has Place de la Concorde. However, possibly the greatest of all is Venice’s Piazza San Marco, surely my favorite and not just because of its historic architecture. When there, you have the opportunity to sit at the outdoor cafes, people watch all day, feed the pigeons and all this can be done in silence due to having no automobiles for miles. Napoleon had called Piazza
